Colonization- Pedro da Cintra 1462, sailing down the coast calls the land the “Lion Mountains” or “Serra Lyoa”.
- Later became a British colony 1787, called Freetown because slaves were brought back to there from England and the US, and for rescued slaves.
- Under British rule from 1808-1960, however it was controlled by The Sierra Leone Co from 1791 until the British government took over.
