Independence
- Gained independence on April 26 1961.
- After two military coups, Siaka Stevens was removed and then returned to power, establishing a republic in April 19, 1971. Became a one party country, the All-People’s Congress.
- 1973 Stevens re-elected, in 1975, made trade agreements with the European Community, which would become known as the European Union.
- Officially became one party, in 1978, and experienced a reduction in trade in the early 80’s
- 1991, Liberian guerrillas joined with unhappy Sierra Leonian rebels, forming the Revolutionary United Front.
- From 1992-1997, 4 different leaders were ousted.
- In 1992, the multiparty system was adopted and in 1996, it was first implemented albeit the civil war.
- UN peace keeping forces arrive in 1999, and by 2001 46,000 RUF rebels surrendered their weapons.
